August 2008 — Mars Petcare Recalls Pedigree, Nutro Suspected

Limited Pedigree Dog Food Recall by Mars Petcare

A salmonella contamination prompted Mars Petcare US to recall 100 of its 20-pound bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunch Bites. The contaminated product is sold at some Albertsons in Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada. The affected bags are stamped with the “best by” dates of July 7, 2009.

This company also makes Nutro pet food which has recently been blamed by consumers for a nationwide outbreak of illnesses—and deaths— of dogs and cats. However, Nutro products are not part of this recall.

To prevent the spread of salmonella contamination pet owners should always:

  • Wash pet food bowls, dishes, and scooping utensils with soap and hot water after each use.
  • Not use pet’s feeding bowl as a scooping utensil. Always use a clean scoop or spoon.
  • Dispose of old or spoiled pet food products in a securely tied plastic bag and place them in a covered trash can.
